The Post tells us that the 5000 series cars have the worst AC in Metro's fleet.

Changes are coming to SmarTrip including reduced cost and a $1 surcharge for using a paper farecard.

This change impacts all public transit in the DC area. Baltimore's Charmcard works in DC and DC's SmarTrip works in Baltimore, too.

If you rode the 52 or 54 buses Friday morning, you might want to go to the doctor. This isn't a joke by any means. Metro announced Monday that a driver on those lines has been diagnosed with viral meningitis. The transit agency has removed the bus involved for sanitation, but the virus is contagious, from what I understand, so you should get yourself checked. Today, Metro introduced the ability to reload your SmartTrip online, for registered cards at http://smartrip.wmata.com/. Hooray for convenience!

Wheaton: All entrance escalators are inoperable due to a mechanical problem. Shuttle bus svc has been requested, station remains open.

You'll find it here. It relies very heavily on shutting down a stretch of a line in both directions and using shuttle buses, which improves service on the open bits dramatically.
